Academic Year Opens with New Opportunities for Students and Their Schools

By D.F. Kratzer
WEST VIRGINIA
—Taking into consideration the theme of this year’s Catholic Schools Week, “Catholic Schools—Dividends for Life,” the diocese’s Department of Catholic Schools is investing, in many ways, in students’ educations and futures, and the 2009-2010 academic year has opened with many new opportunities for students and the diocesan schools they attend.

“Catholic schools,” said Sister Elaine Poitras, CSC, Ph.D., superintendent of diocesan Catholic Schools, “must be able to respond to the demands of a global society and to do that a lot of things have to change.”

To adapt to these demands and to provide students with the best education, she continued, the diocese’s Catholic schools are evaluating the current curriculum, providing extensive professional development for teachers, establishing guiding standards for the schools and increasing the presence and use of technology in the classroom.
In May, the schools department and principals from the Catholic schools developed a list of guiding standards for Catholic education in the 21st century.

These standards provide guidance concerning the church and religious instruction, the curriculum, teaching and learning approaches, school leadership, the development of student leaders, the school and family relationship and school finances.

Sister Elaine said that the department and the schools will continue to work together regarding these principles and “every school will have its own plan about how to implement these,” but all in all, the guidelines are a large part of helping schools improve how they provide for students.

Catholic High School Graduates Obtain Nearly $14 Million in Scholarships

WEST VIRGINIA—The class of 2009 from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston’s seven Catholic high schools have obtained nearly $14 million in scholarships and will attend more than 60 colleges and universities in West Virginia and across the U.S.
Graduates of Madonna High School in Weirton, W.Va.; Bishop Donahue Memorial High School in McMechen, W.Va.; Central Catholic High School in Wheeling, W.Va.; Notre Dame High School in Clarksburg, W.Va.; St. Joseph Central Catholic High School in Huntington, W.Va.; Parkersburg Catholic High School; and Charleston Catholic High School have received a wide range of scholarships to many different colleges and universities.
Robyn Hammond, associate superintendent of diocesan Catholic schools, said she is impressed with the accomplishments of the class of 2009. “This year’s graduating class boasted a 98 percent graduation rate,” she said, “far above the average graduation rate at both state and national levels.
“In addition,” she said, “our graduates were offered nearly $14 million in scholarships collectively, clearly a testimonial to the quality of education offered in our schools. These young men and women will attend over 60 different colleges and universities across the country.”

Catholic Schools Week 2009 Focuses on Service

Washington, D.C.--The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2009 celebrates Catholic schools and community service.

Catholic Schools Week is celebrated nationally the last week in January, this year Jan. 25-31. The logo for the observance shows the words “Celebrate Service” and hands reaching out and surrounding a globe. The “t” in the word celebrate is formed as a cross.

“Civic engagement is a hallmark of Catholic education,” said Karen Ristau, president of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). “The majority of elementary and secondary schools participate in service projects ranging from collecting canned goods for the homeless to rebuilding schools in the hurricane-torn gulf, so it was natural that we choose service as a major theme.”

Schools typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with Masses, open houses and activities for students, administrators, faculty, school staff, the community and families. Additionally this year many schools will undertake new service projects.
